When can you expect to see the AT&T Signal Wireless deal?
It’s not out of the realm of possibility, but AT>T may have its sights set on the wireless industry’s second largest provider, Signal Communications, according to multiple sources with knowledge of the matter.
AT<Hs announcement that it would begin building a nationwide wireless network with AT&m;s T-Mobile has sparked some speculation that AT&cS is looking to acquire the wireless company, which is based in Nashville, Tennessee.
AT >s recent purchase of Time Warner Cable has raised the prospect that the company may be looking to merge with another wireless company.
Signal Communications’ parent company, Charter Communications, also has plans to build a nationwide network, though it remains unclear if the company will pursue the acquisition of Signals parent company AT∓T.
The news comes after AT&ts acquisition of T-mobile, which it acquired last month for $4.4 billion.
In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Charter confirmed that it was planning to expand its nationwide network.
Signals network, however, is expected to be built around its existing service offerings.
The network is expected in 2019 and will include a nationwide mobile-only voice, video and Internet service, along with video and voice calling.
ATMobile and Sprint are both expected to make the network available for lease to sign up customers, according the filing.
AT’s network will be able to reach more than 100 million people and will be powered by a wireless chip called “Signal” that will run in the baseband and on top of a chip that is already in use by the carrier’s network.
The AT&s announcement was met with immediate backlash from other wireless carriers and consumers.
Verizon, for example, said in a statement that it “is committed to providing the fastest wireless options and the best-in-class wireless network for customers and consumers.”
Sprint also took issue with the news and released a statement saying that it is “confident” in the AT’S plan.
“Signal will continue to serve its customers, and AT&md is committed to delivering a world-class network to consumers,” the statement read.
“We will continue our strong relationship with AT &md to build the fastest, most reliable network available to our customers and remain competitive.”AT&=t, however did not comment directly on the possibility of a potential merger.
AT’s decision to enter into an acquisition of Signal came after it purchased the telecommunications company last year.
AT;s acquisition of the T-Mob service has sparked a controversy with consumers, many of whom are upset over AT&mt;s announcement of the acquisition.
The T-mob service, which provides voice, data and video to subscribers in the U.S., is owned by the company’s cable rival, Verizon.
